Region 1. The Lanphere Dunes Unit of the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge is the largest remaining stand of pristine coastal dunes in the Pacific Northwest. Many dunefields on the Pacific coast have already been destroyed by industrial and residential development and others are threatened by recreational impacts, such as the use of off-road vehicles.
The Refuge’s Lanphere Dunes Unit is home to the first dune restoration project on the west coast. Restoration began in the s with early experiments to control invasive European beachgrass (Ammophila arenaria).
By the early s The Nature Conservancy (the past owner) began a large-scale mechanical eradication project that took 6 years to. The Lanphere Dunes have been restored to protect coastal sand dune habitats and species. The dune mat community is home to the native du egrass, Leymus mollis subsp.
